Film star George Clooney and his wife Amal, who is an international human rights lawyer, say they are donating $1 million through their Clooney Foundation for Justice to the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to combat hate groups in the U.S.

The donation is in response to the rally held in Charlottesville, Virginia, by white nationalists and neo-Nazis in which one counter-protester was killed by an alleged right-wing extremist and many others were injured. It also is a reaction to President Trump's refusal unequivocally to condemn white supremacists and his comments placing blame on "both sides."
"We are proud to support the Southern Poverty Law Center in its efforts to prevent violent extremism in the United States," the Clooneys said, in a statement, as reported by Newsweek. "What happened in Charlottesville, and what is happening in communities across our country, demands our collective engagement to stand up to hate."

The SPLC, based in Alabama, is a nonprofit civil rights group founded in 1971, whose main mission is to combat hate, teach tolerance, and seek justice.

"The gift was made in response to a very strong reaction to the sort of injustice that was represented by Charlottesville," said SPLC spokesperson, Wendy Via, in the Newsweek report. "Exposing the dangers of white supremacy is obviously something the SPLC has worked on for decades. I think that there are a lot of really well meaning and informed people who are aware of the prevalence of white supremacy, but it takes unfortunately a tragedy to get it on the radar of the collective conscience.
