Kevin Spacey was accused of inappropriate conduct by at least 20 people over the course of 18 years while he was Artistic Director at London's Old Vic Theatre.

Kevin Spacey was accused of inappropriate conduct by at least 20 people over the course of 18 years, according to a statement released Thursday by London's Old Vic Theatre.

The Old Vic, where Spacey was artistic director from 2004 to 2015, revealed the results of an investigation conducted by a law firm at the theater's request. All but two of the alleged incidents occurred prior to 2009.
None of the alleged victims were minors, the statement says.

However, those affected by Spacey's behavior often were reluctant to raise concerns and felt the actor acted "without sufficient accountability."

"This is clearly unacceptable and The Old Vic Truly apologizes for not creating an environment or culture where people felt able to speak freely," the statement says.

No legal claims, formal grievances, or settlements were made in relation to Spacey during his tenure as Artistic Director.

The theater also notes that it was in a "unique position of having a Hollywood star at the helm around whom existed a cult of personality" and that Spacey's "stardom and status at The Old Vic may have prevented people, and in particular junior staff or young actors, from feeling that they could speak up or raise a hand for help."

The Old Vic asserts it is committed to creating a safe and secure working environment and will take steps to plot a new way forward.

"I have genuine and deep sympathy for all those who have come forward and said they were hurt in some say by my predecessor's actions," said current Artistic Director Matthew Warchus. "Everyone is entitled to work in an environment free from harassment and intimidation. The Old Vic is now actively engaged in the process of healing and the process of prevention.
