Aretha Franklin, long known as the Queen of Soul, is seriously ill at a Detroit hospital, according to several sources.

A longtime friend of Franklin was told about one week ago that Franklin was dying, according to TMZ. Franklin has reportedly lost a significant amount of weight and is now in critical condition.
On Monday morning, family friend Evrod Cassimy confirmed the news, saying that he spoke with her family and that they were asking for prayers. Cassimy said he would release more details about the situation when the family allowed him to do so.

Franklin canceled planned concerts this year after being told by a doctor that she needed to rest and remain at home instead. Last year, she said that she would retire from regularly performing after the release of her latest album,A Brand New Me. Franklin said that she would continue recording and would perform at select events if she felt she was able.

Her last known performance was at an Elton John AIDS Foundation event in November 2017.

At the time, Franklin said she was retiring largely because she wanted to spend more time with her grandchildren.

In 2011, reports claimed that Franklin was being treated for pancreatic cancer. One year later, however, she said that while she experienced a health scare, she was cancer free and feeling good.

Franklin has the third-most Grammy awards for any female artist in history and had a 56-year career as a singer and songwriter
