Patrick Stewart will reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard for the first time since 2002, according to NPR.

Patrick Stewart will reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard for the first time since 2002, according to NPR.

Stewart surprised fans at aStar Trek convention in Las Vegas by appearing on stage with Alex Kurtzman, the executive producer of CBS's newStar Trek: Discovery series, to announce the news.
"I truly felt my time withStar Trek had run its natural course," Stewart said in a statement. "It is, therefore, an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him."

Stewart said that the role had meant so much to him, and the series had meant so much to fans, that he was happy to return for the new television series.

He started playing Captain Picard in 1987 on the TV seriesStar Trek: Next Generation, and also played the role for fourStar Trek movies.

"For over 20 years, fans have hoped for the return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and that day is finally here," Kurtzman said in his own statement. "We can't wait to forge new ground, surprise people, and honor generations both new and old."

CBS has not released details yet about the focus of the new series or its premiere date.

Other news at the Las Vegas event included the announcement that Kenneth Mitchell would be returning as Kol. There will also be changes to the design of the Klingon characters for the series to reflect changes in their society
