Ruby Rose will play Batwoman, the first openly gay superhero to headline a television series, in a new project for the CW.

The character will be introduced in December during a crossover event betweenArrow, The Flash, and Supergirl, all of which are DC Comics shows on the CW.
A standalone series about Batwoman, the alter ego of the social justice focused street fighter Kate Kane, will premiere during the 2019-2020 season. The script is currently being written, and the series will be developed by executive producer Greg Berlanti and writer Caroline Dries.

Rose, who identifies as lesbian and genderfluid, posted a statement on Instagram about what it means to her to play Batwoman in the series.

"The Bat is out of the bag and I am beyond thrilled and honored," Rose wrote in the Instagram post. "I'm also an emotional wreck... because this is a childhood dream. This is something I would have died to have seen on TV when I was a young member of the LGBT community who never felt represented on TV and felt alone and different."

After she was cast in season three of Netflix's hit showOrange is the New Black, Rose instantly became a fan favorite and new star in Hollywood. She has also appeared inJohn Wick: Chapter 2, xXx: Return of Xander Cage,andBreak Free.
